NLT Technologies, Ltd. (President: Susumu Ohi; Head office: Kawasaki, Kanagawa) has developed a prototype 19.5-inch auto-stereoscopic LCD developed by NLT Technologies with full HD resolution in 3D mode, adopting the company’s proprietary glassless 3D display technology, HxDP (horizontal x times density pixels).
The new prototype is expected to be utilized for educational or high-end medical applications that demand more precise and realistic three-dimensional imaging than achieved with traditional naked-eye 3D displays.
The display has a 19.5-inch diagonal screen size, which is the largest NLT auto-stereoscopic display demonstrated to-date. The display combines full HD 3D resolution with a high luminance of 700 cd/m2, enabling bright, high-resolution display of 3D images. In the 2D display mode, the display achieves a wide viewing angle of 176 degrees at vertical and horizontal, providing vivid images without color inversion even when viewed off-angle.
HxDP is a multi-viewable auto-stereoscopic display technology that uses a unique pixel alignment to achieve crisp high-density 3D images (the prototype is a 2-view model). With this technology, pixels are distributed horizontally and divided into multiple numbers as perceptible data for right eye and left eye. As a result, it is possible to provide excellent 3D images without decreasing the resolution.
Another significant feature of HxDP is its capability to display 3D and 2D images simultaneously on the same screen. With HxDP, more flexible image construction can be achieved because brilliant 3D images and 2D images (such as charts, tables, etc.) can be clearly displayed at the same time.
NLT Technologies previously developed high-density glassless 3D displays using its proprietary HxDP technology in displays 7.2″ and smaller. The new design improvements in the HxDP technology have enabled this exponential increase in display size. The new prototype achieves 1 {4d5cb383d6a84e14da1e3e2dc94c94a8967ddf15367cb6f606ed0843e4e3f5e4} of 3D crosstalk even at the larger screen size, providing high quality 3D images with fine contrast between pop-out and depth. Moreover, full HD resolution provides clear 3D images, enabling the display to understand the before/after position of small organs such as blood vessels or to view very thin surgical strings, making it an ideal monitor for surgical applications such as endoscopy.
3D displays have recently been introduced in the medical, broadcast, and educational markets, where demand for larger size stereoscopic 3D displays is increasing. This is especially true in the medical field, as the opportunity to use stereo cameras increases along with the improvement of the resolution at the camera. However, such high-end use requires low 3D crosstalk, so users have had to depend on the glasses-type 3D method. The discomfort of wearing glasses and the limitation for movement caused by the cables of the glasses has increased the demand for glassless, high-density, low-crosstalk auto-stereoscopic display development.
NLT Technologies is developing further improvements for high-density auto-stereoscopic technology by combining this unique HxDP with its proprietary 3D eye-tracking system, Truly Realistic 3D Images (TR3i), aiming for wider 3D viewing areas and multi-viewable images.
